Retinoid 101: Choosing the Right Strength for Your Skin

Retinal, retinol, and retinoic acid are not interchangeable. Here's how to pick your entry point, build tolerance, and actually see results without the purge horror stories.

    Skinevora Editorial

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives — the most evidence-backed anti-ageing and acne-treating ingredient class in skincare. But 'retinoid' is an umbrella term that covers a spectrum of potency, and choosing the wrong starting point is why most people quit before seeing results.

    What is Retinol?

Retinol is the most common over-the-counter retinoid. Once applied, your skin converts it to retinaldehyde, then to retinoic acid — the active form that actually drives cell turnover, collagen synthesis, and pigmentation correction.

Start low and slow — can cause dryness, peeling, and purging in first 4–6 weeks. Always use SPF.

    The Retinoid Ladder

Not all retinoids are created equal. The number of conversion steps to retinoic acid determines both potency and irritation potential:

Retinyl Palmitate / Retinyl Acetate3 stepsVery mildSensitive beginners, maintenance

    Clinically-Proven Benefits

    1. Anti-Ageing & Collagen Boost

Retinoids stimulate fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin. Multiple clinical trials show that 0.1% retinol used for 12 weeks reduces fine wrinkle depth by up to 44%. It's the closest thing to a proven anti-ageing active in over-the-counter skincare.

    2. Acne & Cell Turnover

By accelerating the shedding of dead skin cells, retinoids prevent pores from clogging — the root cause of comedonal acne. Prescription tretinoin is the gold standard for acne, but OTC retinol at 0.3–0.5% can also produce meaningful improvement over 8–12 weeks.

    3. Hyperpigmentation & Tone

Retinoids inhibit tyrosinase (the enzyme responsible for melanin production) and speed up the turnover of pigmented cells. This makes them effective for melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and sun spots — particularly when combined with niacinamide or vitamin C.

    Getting Started: The Sandwich Method

Start with 0.025%–0.05% retinol if you're a beginner. Use it once or twice a week, at night only, after moisturiser (the sandwich method). Build frequency over 6–8 weeks before increasing concentration.

Apply a thin layer of plain moisturiser, wait 1–2 minutes, apply retinol, then seal with another layer of moisturiser. This reduces transepidermal water loss during retinol's initial irritation phase without significantly blunting efficacy. As your skin acclimates, you can move to applying retinol directly to dry skin.

    What to Layer With Retinol

Niacinamide — Buffers irritation and strengthens barrier — apply before retinol
Hyaluronic Acid — Counteracts retinol dryness — use on damp skin before moisturiser
Ceramides — Essential for barrier repair during retinol adjustment period
SPF (next morning) — Non-negotiable — retinol increases photosensitivity

Do not use retinoids while pregnant or breastfeeding. Always apply SPF the next morning — retinoids increase photosensitivity. Avoid combining with strong AHAs/BHAs or benzoyl peroxide in the same routine.
